Dismantle Day: Sanding, sanding and more sanding

One last photo before the cosmetic operation (dismantle and paint)

Dismantle day was a sad day but after many weeks of tests I had felt confident that the layout of buttons and feel of the arcade was right. After saying my farewells to my newly built friend I took hold of my power drill and got to work carefully dismantling the cabinet.

:/

I made sure to try and keep the wiring in tact as much as possible by labelling all the wires to save time reassembling. In hindsight I probably shouldn’t have got my cable management on until final paint was on.

After a quick trip to Bunnings I was equipped with a dust mask and several grades of circular sanding discs (fit perfectly in Steve’s sander. Thanks Steve!) Starting with the roughest grade 120 I got to work on creating my very own Sandstorm to the beat of The Prodigy.

The lack of shade was starting to burn down on my ginger complexion so I needed to work fast. I decided on only sanding the second run (grade 240) across areas that would show and not much time on the interior sides of the cabinet.

So after a few hours I had a red neck and a smooth set of cabinet pieces. Almost as smooth as this guy

Next post I trial out some paints and varnish finishes!

Have an idea on the type of finish you’re going with? Last I recall you were thinking of matte black weren’t you?
